In addition to Kennedy’s above average academic honors, students here are more than just a bunch of smart kids; many could be viewed as possible art majors.
Showcase of the Stars is an event that Kennedy has held now for the fifth year in a row. It is described as a junior art show of current art work from the 2009-2010 school year.
Today, May 21, 6:30-8:30 Kennedy’s Black Box will be turned into an art gallery that consists of all medias: painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, computer graphics, and photography. Admission is free along with the refreshments and student entertainment that will also be there.
The student’s artwork is to be judged by two local artists, David Van Allen and Heather Wagner. Van Allen is the Senior Lecturer of Art and Gallery Director at Mount Mercy College. Wagner is the owner of Heather Wagner Designs and has her own studio where she specializes in repurposed painted furniture and one-of-a-kind murals.
“I love showcasing our students work,” says Patty Walsh, art and photography teacher. “We have some very talented students.”
Some seniors that will have their work showcased are Emily Goodard, Brooke Prouty, and Kristi Roehr.
“Showcase of the Stars is a really great combination of everyone’s work,” says Goodard.
To have your work be showcased you must submit your artwork to one of the three art teachers, where they then decide if it will be shown.
“Also, we select good artwork we see in class and ask those students to submit it,” says Walsh.
All in all it is an honor to have your work be shown in a gallery setting. Go support students tonight and you will be amazed what students here can really do.
